Women In Your Life

Just heard today that one of my mates is getting married. Good luck to him and I’am happy for him, for his marriage and also because I never wanted to be the first one to make a fool out of myself by tying the noose. So, that fool is going to be him. But thinking about marriage, I just happen to remember song from famous musical My Fair Lady. It’s a must see if anyone hasn’t, and our fellow Proffesor Higgins is the one who is singing it. And I like to hum it too, whenever a think “of letting women in my life”. (My apologies to the fairer sex.)

I’m an ordinary man
Who desires nothing more
Than just an ordinary chance
To live exactly as he likes
And do precisely what he wants.

An average man am I,
Of no eccentric whim,
Who likes to live his life, free of strife,
Doing whatever he thinks is best for him.
Oh, Just an ordinary man.

But! Let a woman in your life,
And your serenity is through.
She’ll redecorate your home
from the cellar to the dome,
Then go to the enthralling fun
Of overhauling you.

Let a woman in your life,
And you’re up against a wall.
Make a plan and you will find
She has something else in mind,
And so rather than do either
You do something else that neither likes at all.

You want to talk of Keats or Milton;
She only wants to talk of love.
You go to see a play or ballet
And spend it searching for her glove.

Let a woman in your life,
And you invite eternal strife.
Let them buy their wedding bands
For those anxious little hands.
I’d be equally as willing
For a dentist to be drilling
Than to ever let a woman in my life!

I’m a very gentle man,
Even-tempered and good-natured
Whom you never hear complain;
Who has the milk of human kindness
By the quart in every vein.

A patient man am I,
Down to my fingertips;
The sort who never could, ever would,
Let an insulting remark escape his lips.
A very gentle man.

But! Let a woman in your life,
And patience hasn’t got a chance.
She will beg you for advice.
Your reply will be concise,
And she’ll listen very nicely,
Then go out and do precisely what she wants!

You were a man of grace and polish
Who never spoke above a hush.
Now all at once you’re using language
That would make a sailor blush.

Let a woman in your life,
And you’re plunging in a knife!
Let the others of my sex
Tie the knot around their necks.
I’d prefer a new edition
Of the Spanish Inquisition
Than to ever let a woman in my life.

I’m a quiet living man,
Who prefers to spend the evenings
In the silence of his room;
Who likes an atmosphere as restful
As an undiscovered tomb.

A pensive man am I,
Of philosophic joys;
Who likes to meditate, contemplate,
Free from humanity’s mad inhuman noise.
A quiet living man.

But! Let a woman in your life,
And your sabbatical is through.
In a line that never ends
Come an army of her friends;
Come to jabber and to chatter,
And to tell her what the matter is with you!

She’ll have a booming, boisterous family,
Who will descend on you en masse.
She’ll have a large Wagnerian mother
With a voice that shatters glass.

Let a woman in your life!
Let a woman in your life!

When I was a kid, I prayed for a bicycle everyday. Then I realized that god does not work this way. So I stole one and prayed for forgiveness.

Think different

* Did anyone know which was the biggest trading market in the world? It’s the forex market. It trades on currencies, is a round the clock market with approx. daily trade of 5 Trillion USD.

* Did anyone know that Chicago Mercantile Exchange trades on weather futures i.e it trades bonds wherein returns are guarenteed if it rains in next 6 months.

We seem to get so involved what we do day in and day out that we completely ignore how things are moving around us. What new ideas have evolved, how people are thinking innovative ways to improve processes around us. Are we just concentrating on how to climb corporate ladder rather than THINK so 10-15 years down the line we look back and say – “hey, before I came they did this thing very badly”. Even if not in our professional life, but did we ever try to observe how our moms cook food and if there is something to be improved in kitchen to make things easier – location of utensils, placement of cupboards and drawers, or how best to use a pressure cooker and save on feul. Maybe we all have to…..think different.

Stories from the Raj

I wonder if anyone has read Ruskin Bond. He writes stories, mostly about The Raj and mostly scary stories. His Omnibus II has quite a lot on ghosts, nightmares, and haunted houses. England as a country is known for it’s haunted mansions – magnificant manors haunted by previous owners. When the brits came to India, they seem to have found a perfect match with the sub continent having it’s own share of superstitions and myths. Considering that 19th century was not the bset of times for Indian folks as far as education is concerned, the brits had a lot of scary stories to write home about. Due to difficulties in authenticating them, we don’t know if they are really true of hold any good. But that surely must have been exciting time. The sub continent with no major cities, hot, dusty, sultry nights with local folklores and superstitions. The non availability of any modern facilities of light would have contributed to the whole effect. So, there you have – few officers of the british empire controlling number of villages under them, scores of people with own traditions and religion and these officers with there own ideas of haunted houses and strange incidents. Romance indeed !!!!!!

Deamon Haunted World

The title of this blog is taken from work of Carl Sagan – Demon-Haunted World. Sagan needs no introduction, being one of the foremost authors on popular science. The book aims at analyzing popular beliefs through history and cultures and get a scentific hold on many of them. I dare not say if he is right or wrong, or the premise that there is nothing except brute reasoning to everything. However, I have observed that even in the age we live in, we have not been able to develop an intrinsic ability to observe things with scientific temper. Most of us tend to be influenced by emotions and rhetoric, surrendering our ability to reason and argue. Our faith in a debate of reason and logic is the ultimate casualty. This I say due to sudden spurt of clash of nation in our present geo political environment and not just between nations within nations even in our city and community.

Are we missing something….somewhere ?
